Portland Building joins warming shelters as cold temperatures persist

PORTLAND, Ore. – Overnight temperatures fall into the low 20-degree range in the Portland metro area, creating dangerous conditions for people living on the streets.

The Portland Municipal Services Building at SW 5th Avenue and Main Street will open its doors Wednesday night as an emergency warming shelter. It will be open from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday.

“The city and county are committed to not turning anybody away from shelter during the severe weather,” Mayor Elect Ted Wheeler said. “The system’s capacity needs to expand as the cold weather continues. The Portland Building is a good option to increase that capacity.”

A system of arctic air brought freezing temperatures into the region. The cold air is accompanied by strong gusts, and the wind chill can make it feel like single-digit temperatures.

LATEST FORECAST

The freezing temperatures are expected to last into the weekend, and there’s a chance the emergency shelter will remain open Thursday and Friday nights as well.

The non-profit Transition Projects will lead a volunteer staff of city workers to keep the shelter open. Officials said there's a chance the Portland Building will remain open as an overnight shelter on Thursday and Friday.

If you are trying to help someone find a warm place to stay, call 2-1-1 for information on nearby shelters.

Portland Police said a 51-year-old man died of hypothermia Monday night. You can call the police non-emergency number for a welfare check on anyone you think might be suffering in the cold.
