Portland Marathon, city officials to negotiate a new race route

Late Friday afternoon, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) says they're entering a new round of negotiations with Portland Marathon organizers, potentially rescuing this year's event from cancellation.

Dylan Rivera with PBOT says the two parties are discussing a new race route.

The City of Portland denied a permit for the Portland Marathon's original proposed race route, citing a shortage of police officers to provide adequate security on that particular route.

It's hoped that the city and marathon organizers can agree on a new route that will work for both parties.

Rivera said if these negotiations fail, marathon organizers can still appeal the original permit denial.

Rivera's full statement:

“The Portland Bureau of Transportation has suspended the process of considering the Portland Marathon’s potential appeal of our denial of its special event permit, pending the outcome of recently started negotiations over a new route for the event. The denial is not rescinded, and should these negotiations fail, the appeal process could be reinstated.”
