Portland's Rose Test Garden celebrates 100th birthday
PORTLAND, Ore. —
Portland's famous International Rose Test Garden celebrated a historic milestone today: its 100th birthday!
The garden's centennial celebration started at 11 AM Saturday, and will run until 8:30 PM.
The garden was started a century ago as part of a project to help preserve European roses threatened by World War I.
Guests at the celebration said they were impressed by both the history and the flowers.
"Yeah there's 550 different varieties of roses in the garden. I don't know any other kind of rose collection like this," said Julia Hess. "And the fact that it's been around for 100 years, there's a lot of history with this one flower and all those different varieties."
Visitors enjoyed live music, and free art and cupcakes at the celebration.
A concert in the park will close out the evening.
