CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. – Drivers on Interstate 84 should expect rolling slowdowns and delays in both directions around noon Thursday.

The Oregon Department of Transportation will be performing a rock blast near I-84. They say this is necessary to build the latest segment of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail.

Officials say this will be one of the smallest in the series of blasts.

It will take place near milepost 53.

The Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail segment will connect Wyeth and Lindsey Creek. At Lindsey Creek, blasting will make room for a new segment of trail in the existing rock slope.

The rolling slowdowns are to ensure travelers are not in the area as the blast occurs.

At the blast site, crews will remove rock debris from I-84 before safely reopening the highway.
