Several downtown Portland streets will be closed this weekend during the erection of the construction crane for Multnomah County's new Central Courthouse.

County officials say the work will be completed during non-commute hours.

The following traffic plan will be in place from 7 PM Friday until Sunday evening.

  • Southwest Madison Street will be closed from Southwest 2nd Avenue to east of Southwest Naito Parkway. Eastbound access to the Hawthorne Bridge for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians will be maintained from Northbound Southwest Naito. From downtown, use Southwest Columbia Street eastbound, turn left at Naito. This will be the eastbound detour route for TriMet buses that use the Hawthorne Bridge.
  • Southwest First Avenue will be closed from Southwest Main Street to Southwest Jefferson Street.

Westbound access to the Hawthorne Bridge will not be impacted.

The construction crane will be 296 feet tall initially. When the building reaches mid-height, the crane height will be extended to 418 feet, according to the county.

Then new Central Courthouse is estimated to cost $300 million and open in 2020.
