Sheriff's office: Deputies didn’t intentionally violate policy on ICE sharing
PORLTAND, Ore. —
The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office has cleared deputies they say did not intentionally violate policy when they shared information with U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents last December.
Emails obtained by the Portland Tribune in February show deputies helping ICE officials deport undocumented immigrants.
The sheriff's office says an internal investigation found policy directions regarding such interactions were unclear and that actions taken were compliant with directives put in place previously.
In late January, Sheriff Mike Reese instituted a new policy that clearly defined the guidelines deputies must follow to be compliant with state and municipal laws. Specifically, that deputies would not share information about immigration status unless a federal agency has a warrant or it specifically relates to a criminal investigation.
