Sleeps at jail, roams during day, man accused of attacking woman
MCMINNVILLE, Ore. - A man who had been roaming around McMinnville during the day but was sleeping at the Yamhill County Jail at night was arrested Wednesday after police said he tried to sexually assault a woman.
McMinnville police think 44-year-old Trinidad Dario Padilla had been watching his potential victim for several days at the downtown store where she works.
Police said Padilla waited until there was no one else in the store before he went in and attacked the woman at about 1:15 p.m. The woman fought back and screamed until Padilla gave up and left, police said. The woman then ran to a nearby store and called for help.
Police said the woman didn't know her attacker.
Padilla is part of a unique program at the jail. As part of his probation, he was allowed to stay at the jail at night since he had nowhere else to go. He'd been found guilty of sexual assault before.
Padilla is currently in jail, held on a probation violation. But police said he will likely be charged with first-degree attempted rape, kidnapping and sex abuse.
