Stepfather accidentally shoots stepson while showing off gun

MONMOUTH, Ore. - A 33-year-old man has been arrested after he accidentally shot his 8-year-old stepson, police said.

The incident happened Monday in a rural area near Monmouth. Polk County Sheriff's deputies said they were first told that a stranger shot the boy but they now believe Ricardo Ontiveroz, also known as Steven Hanna, accidentally shot the child in the left shoulder while showing off his .38 revolver.

The boy was taken to Salem Hospital and underwent surgery. His condition is unknown.

Police say three other children were home at the time of the accident.

According to police, the boy's mom, Michal Hanna, coached the kids on what to say to police about the shooting to cover up what happened. They also say a friend also helped to cover up the true nature of what occurred. Both were cited and released.

Ontiveroz is charged with a felon in possession of a firearm, assault, tampering with a witness, tampering with evidence and reckless endangering. His bail is set at $52,500.
