An 18-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a Vancouver teenager appeared in court for the first time Monday, less than a week after the murder.

Kole Jones, 18, is accused of robbing and killing Shawn Scott Jr., 17, at Holladay Park in Northeast Portland last Tuesday.

Jones pleaded not guilty. His family says he and Scott did not know each other.

Jones was arrested last Friday while driving a stolen car in Gresham. He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on Murder, Robbery I, and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle; bail is set at $250,000.

Another teen, 17-year-old Malique Kennerly-Hicks of N Portland was also taken into custody on robbery charges. He's being held at the juvenile detention center.

Back in January, Jones was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in Deschutes County. He was charged with stealing from a Portland-area department store that same month.

Sean Jones, the suspect's brother, tells KATU News he hasn't been able to speak with his brother yet, but that this type of crime is out of character for his little brother. Sean Jones says he is hoping police will find Jones killed Scott in self defense.
