Three injured in wrecks involving 25 cars on I-84, police say
PORTLAND, Ore. - About 25 vehicles were involved in five different crashes that happened nearly at the same time Monday afternoon that closed all westbound lanes of Interstate 84 two miles east of Corbett near Rooster Rock State Park for about 90 minutes.
Three people were injured and were taken to the hospital. All three are expected to be OK, according to Oregon State Police.
The wreck happened at about 4 p.m., police said.
By 7 p.m., both lanes were reopened.
Multnomah County Sheriff Office deputies were first on the scene, and they worked to remove the wrecked vehicles.
According to OSP, heavy holiday traffic was traveling in heavy rain with standing water on the roadway when the accidents happened.
Witnesses described to KATU News a sort of chain reaction. Cars that had stopped for the first wreck were hit from behind. Then a few dozen yards back the same thing happened again.
OSP said the wrecks happened over a mile and a half of freeway.
One woman's car was totaled in the wreck. She and her baby were OK. A stranger let them sit in the stranger's car during a lightning storm to keep them safe.
Police said they issued no citations.
