Timbers fans camp out for season opener, businesses gear up for rush
PORTLAND, Ore. —
The wait is over for the Timbers Army.
The 2017 MLS season kicks off Friday night at Providence Park, and plenty of fans camped out overnight Thursday on the sidewalk outside the stadium.
As usual, the sidewalk space outside Providence Park was packed with tents as Timbers fans camped out -- some since Wednesday -- in hopes of securing a good seat.
And perhaps the only people more excited about the upcoming season are local businesses who are about to see their numbers skyrocket.
“Usually, there’s just one person to pour beer, and even with that we can’t always keep up with people because it’s just like bam, bam, bam, bam, bam,” said Joshua Bassett, assistant manager at Hot Lips Pizza.
And for fans, there’s no line too long, whether it’s for a beer or a ticket to the game.
“It’s part of our culture. Now every game we’re camping out, doing this and meeting lots of people and new friends,” said Timbers fan Aaron Elhers who was camping out Thursday night.
The Timbers missed the playoffs last year after winning the championship 2 years ago. They start with expansion club Minnesota United on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Providence Park.
