Two Oregon soldiers honored at Memorial Day ceremonies

SALEM -- On last year's Memorial Day, John Pelham and Cody Patterson honored their fallen comrades.

This year, it's Army Spc. John Pelham and Pfc. Cody Patterson who will be honored.

Pelham, 22, was killed in February in Afghanistan.

Patterson, 24, was killed in October, also in Afghanistan.

The two men were honored with a ceremony in Salem where a hundred people remembered their service and their ultimate sacrifice.

There are now 142 names on the list of fallen Oregon heroes who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Pelham's name was also engraved in a stone at a memorial in Hillsboro honoring Washington County's fallen soldiers.

There are now 20 stones.

"My first impression is that's way too many," said Wendall Pelham, John's father. "One would have been too many. Then, on the other hand, the freedoms that pave this country are paved with the blood, sweat and lives of multiple soldiers throughout our existence as a country."
