Web Exclusive: Training up for Afghanistan as U.S. troop presence winds down

NEAR BOISE, Idaho -- KATU was the only TV news crew with Oregon's U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden Tuesday, who flew out to Idaho to witness the training for hundreds of troops from the Oregon National Guard near Gowen Field Air National Guard Base.

The Oregon Army National Guard's 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team is scheduled to mobilize three battalions to Afghanistan this summer. They'll be heading there as some of the last troops to wind down the U.S. presence there.

Wyden told troops he wants to make sure their mission is seen as just as important and, perhaps, even more difficult than before.
