What does the world's most expensive painting look like? See for yourself
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Before you think $142 million for a single painting is a whopping price, you should know it's actually three paintings.
They're a series of portraits -- called a triptych -- painted in 1969 by Francis Bacon.
A wealthy art collector bought it in November at auction and agreed to loan it to the Portland Art Museum until March.
The gallery debuted on Saturday to a nonstop flow of visitors. (Click the link to read a detailed description of the painting and artist from the Portland Art Museum's website.)
"It was not intended to be separated. It was intended to be seen like this," said museum director Brian Ferriso.
Ferriso admits he knows who bought the art, but won't say.
And so the mystery continues.
