Woman dies when tree falls through SE Portland house
PORTLAND, Ore. - A falling tree killed a woman early Wednesday morning while the 60-year-old slept in her Southeast Portland house.
The tree was uprooted around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday during the heavy rain and wind from an overnight storm. Portland Fire & Rescue says it completely sheared the front corner of the home on Southeast Insley Street from the back of the house.
The woman was pinned by the tree; she was later pronounced deceased.
The woman's husband and brother managed to get out of the home safely, fire officials say.
The tree fell from a neighboring property and damaged the home's foundation. Fire crews worked to stabilize the structure so they could remove the tree and retrieve the woman.
More than 5 inches of rain have fallen on Portland since Sunday. The flooding in Oregon and Washington has unleashed landslides, flooding and wreaked havoc on transit systems.
