Woodinville man, 55, dies in rafting accident on the coast

ILWACO, Wash. - A Woodinville man who works as a nurse at Harborview Medical Center died Saturday in a rafting accident in the coastal waters off Cape Disappointment State Park near Ilwaco.

A second man on the raft, who also works as a Harborview nurse, was able to make it back to shore.

The incident unfolded Saturday afternoon when the Pacific County 911 dispatch center received a call reporting a person in distress in the ocean waters off of Benson Beach, said Pacific County Sheriff Scott L. Johnson.

Responding deputies learned that John Beaumier, 55, of Woodinville and Israel Anderson, 28, of Seattle had entered the ocean in their inflatable raft in the surf off the beach.

The rough waters capsized their raft several times, but the men were able to get back on board. The raft then capsized again - and this time it partially deflated.

Anderson was able to hold onto the raft and maintain control of one paddle, which he used to get himself back to shore. But Beaumier became separated from his companion in the surf and was unable to make it to the shoreline.

The Pacific County Surf Rescue Team immediately launched two personal watercraft that were used to tow floating backboards to the scene. One of the team members spotted Beaumier unconscious in the ocean, and the two team members were able to get him to shore and start CPR.

Beaumeir was taken to Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco, where he was pronounced dead.

Neither man was wearing a life jacket.

Johnson said Beaumier and his wife had been camping at the state park with Anderson and his girlfriend before the accident.
