Group may seek tax increases on corporations at ballot box
SALEM, Ore. (AP) Two days after a Democratic plan to increase taxes failed in the state House, the liberal group Our Oregon says it may pursue ballot measures that would increase taxes on corporations.
The organization, which is funded primarily by unions, said Friday that it has introduced six potential ballot measures and will decide later which, if any, to pursue. Some of the group's potential initiatives mirror provisions of the failed Democratic bill. Others would raise significantly more revenue from businesses.
Gov. John Kitzhaber has been trying to get unions and businesses to work together to overhaul the state tax code. Kitzhaber spokesman Tim Raphael says Our Oregon's announcement is typical "noise" that arises during a legislative session. He says the governor has urged labor and business groups to "show some restraint."
