Oregon's newest state park, Cottonwood Canyon, opens this month

CENTRAL OREGON - A plan to create a new state park in Oregon each year for a decade has now come full circle.

Cottonwood State Park, which officially opens at the end of the month, is the last park to be opened under former Gov. Ted Kulongoski's Park-A-Year initiative, which was launched in 2004. Prior to the initiative, a new state park had not been opened in Oregon in over 30 years.

The new state park will open Sept. 24 and during the first full weekend (Sept. 28-29) there will be guided hikes and activities for kids from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

The park is located in North Central Oregon along the lower John Day River.
