Ducks take Civil War on the diamond, 6-3
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Dylan Davis had two hits to pace the sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team but the Beavers dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 16 Oregon Tuesday night at Goss Stadium.
Aaron Payne's one-out triple in the top of the ninth scored two, breaking a 3-3 deadlock, which sent the Ducks to the win in the first game of the Civil War, presented by PacificSource Health Plans, NW Ford Dealers, McDonald's and Wells Fargo. Oregon State dropped to 25-6 on the year while Oregon improved to 24-8.
The loss went to Oregon State reliever Brandon Jackson, who fell to 4-1 after allowing one hit and one run in 2 1/3 innings of work. The win went to Garrett Clevinger, his first of the year, and Jimmie Sherfy picked up his ninth save of the season.
Oregon State, which led off the game with a run in the first on a bases loaded walk to Jake Rodriguez, found itself down 3-1 entering the bottom of the fourth. The Beavers tied the game when Kavin Keyes scored on a Jerad Casper single, then Ryan Barnes drove in Casper on a squeeze.
Davis doubled in the third and singled in the fifth for his 13th multiple-hit game of the season.
Payne and Tyler Baumgartner led the Ducks with two hits apiece.
Neither starter figured in the decision as each was pulled early. Taylor Starr started for the Beavers and allowed three runs and three hits with four strikeouts in three innings. Jordan Spencer, meanwhile, worked 2 2/3 innings for Oregon, allowing four hits and a run. He left with a 3-1 lead but OSU scored two runs off his immediate replacement, Jeff Gold.
Oregon State returns to Pac-12 Conference play Friday when opening a three-game series against Utah. First pitch Friday from Goss Stadium is slated for 5:35 p.m. PT.
