Brandon Roy is in his first year as a high school basketball coach.

The former Portland Trail Blazer has brought his team Nathan Hale to compete in this year’s Les Schwab Invitational at Liberty High School.

He has some of the top talent in Seattle on his team. For the 32-year-old Roy, a return to a place where he was so popular as a player is fun, but the rookie head coach also needs to stay focused on the new gig.

“It’s exciting, you know. It’s kind of mixed emotions, because fans ask for pictures and autographs, but I’m here to coach the team, and I’m trying to stay focused,” he told KATU during an interview at the Invitational. “I want the guys to see that I’m focused and hopefully carries over to them, but I’m also happy, really, to hear fans talk about some of the old memories, old Blazer moments, so I’m happy to be here, but you know at the same time we’re here to try and win this thing and try to go one game at a time.”

Roy’s Nathan Hale Raiders squad crushed his alma mater, Garfield Bulldogs, Thursday night, 87-64.

His team plays Sierra Canyon Trailblazers, another top team in the nation, Friday night.
