Hawks fall 4-1 in Game 1 of WHL Final
The Portland Winterhawks dropped a 4-1 decision Friday to the Edmonton Oil Kings in Game 1 of the WHL Final in front of 10,097 fans at the Rose Garden.
The Winterhawks dominated play for much of the first period and outshot Edmonton 16-6 in the opening frame, but it was the Oil Kings' Dylan Wruck who scored the lone goal 2:03 into the game to take a 1-0 lead into the second.
The Oil Kings made it 2-0 when Henrik Samuelsson scored at the 11:17 mark of the second, which remained the score going into the third.
The Hawks got on the board 3:00 into the third period when Taylor Leier banged in a rebound on the doorstep to cut the Oil Kings' lead to 2-1, but just 47 seconds later Samuelsson scored his second of the game to put Edmonton back up by two, 3-1. Curtis Lazar then gave Edmonton a 4-1 lead at the 10:03 mark to round out the scoring.
Mac Carruth made 25 saves on 29 shots in net for the Hawks. Laurent Brossoit turned away 35 of the 36 shots he faced for Edmonton.
Portland was 0-4 on the power play, and 1-1 on the penalty kill.
Game 2 of the series is tomorrow at the Rose Garden at 7 p.m.
