Track star Rupp guest of honor at Central Catholic
PORTLAND, Ore. - Olympic silver medalist and former UofO track star Galen Rupp had quite the homecoming Friday.
The crowd chanted "USA" at Central Catholic's homecoming assembly where Rupp was the guest of honor.
He showed off his silver medal, signed autographs, and posed for pictures. Rupp started his competitive running career at the school, and he tells students they can one day wear a medal, too.
"I've told them it can happen to them too," he said Friday. "I was no different from them being a freshman here at Central Catholic, not really knowing what I wanted to do. I came in here thinking I wanted to play soccer and I pushed over to running and it worked out pretty well."
The school also retired Rupp's racing uniform.
Rupp made headlines this summer by winning the silver medal in the 10,000 meter race in London. He's also the current American record holder in that race.
