Each week during high school football season KATU sports photographer Mike "Rossy" Rosborough previews the upcoming action on High School Blitz, which airs Friday nights at 11:35 p.m. Here's Rossy's look ahead at week 5:
Considering this excellent run of great football weather we are having, don't pass up your chance to see some of the exciting matchups that are out there for the taking this week. Allow me to point out four top games that we are going to have fun getting highlights from: The undefeated Aloha Warriors (5-0) and their human highlight film, Thomas Tyner, play host to the Beaverton Beavers (4-1). Check it out; they'll have great crowd support, it's a key game and there is big potential for some long range scoring plays. It will be a fun environment for any family.
If you are on the south side, #2 Lake Oswego (5-0) travels to Canby (2-3), another exciting stadium scene with local fans cheering their lungs out for the Cougars in hopes of an upset over the Lakers to break their century old grip on the Three Rivers League.
Living downtown? Gresham (5-0) takes on Central Catholic (3-2) at Jeld-Wen Field in a defining Mt. Hood League showdown, with the winner having a clear edge for the title.
For the smaller schools in 5A, Hood River Valley (4-1), early leader of the mid-Columbia schools, buses to Wilson (4-1) to meet the Trojans, the surprising and clear early leader of the PIL. The Wilson students and their pet gorilla and banana mascots have as much fun as any all worth the reasonable price of admission.
Our "Game of the Week" takes Nate Bynum and his highlight band of renowned photographers to the north side and rejuvenated Roosevelt High School. The Roughriders (3-2) have a new stadium, football field and state-of-the-art track in St. Johns, the result of newfound support from inside and outside the school. No longer a "bye week" for everyone else, the Riders' welcome Madison's Senators (3-2) in a key 5A PIL contest that will go a long way to establishing the second seed. Both squads are young and built for the future; for example, Roosevelt has only three seniors this season. Tune in to the BLITZ and find out who gets to go live with Nate and celebrate victory.
When Tigard and Tualatin tee it up, it's more than a rivalry game between in-district schools. Recent history says the winner goes on to be Pacific Conference champion. This year is no different as the Timberwolves (5-0) enter the "Tiger's Lair" for a battle with the Tigers (4-1). It's your classic big time defense. Tualatin has given up a state low 37 points and collides with a prolific offense - see Tigard's 184 points. This is also another terrific venue to see a game.
A few other games of note on our board: Jesuit (4-1) looks to get back into the Metro race at host Westview's (2-3) expense, even without stud running back AJ Glass. The Crusaders' outstanding line play and deep reserves make them the favorite.
Oregon City (3-2) and Grant (2-3) play a non-conference game at Lincoln that should showcase two running teams that mix in the pass. Expect a high scoring game down to the wire here.
Down south in Salem, the improving South Salem Saxons (3-2) strap it on at Sprague (4-1) in the battle for bragging rights over the south side of the capital city. The Olympians need a bounce back after last week's road loss and South has been beatable on the road. West Salem (4-1) leaves their black turf behind and crosses the Willamette to meet McKay's Royal Scots on the east side. The Titans are favored over the young Scots.
Last but not least, we want to show some love to the down on their luck 5A PIL with two matchups. Benson buses to Powell Blvd for a battle with Cleveland. They have awesome burgers in the corner shack that are well worth a look. Embattled squads from Franklin and Jefferson mix it up on the Demo's grass field with the outcome giving one of these teams their first "W" of 2012.
That sums up this week's BLITZ plan of attack. Tune in Friday night at 11: 30 p.m. for the fastest thirty minutes on television where the premier sideline lensmen risk life and limb to bring back the finest clips for your entertainment and information. We'll be looking for you from the sidelines don't be shy!
