Winterhawks fall 2-1 in Victoria, still lead series 2-1

The Portland Winterhawks fell 2-1 in Game 3 of their second round series in Victoria against the Royals Monday, but the Hawks still hold a 2-1 lead in the series.

Victoria opened the scoring 2:49 into the game on a power play goal by Brandon Magee, then struck again with the man advantage when Austin Carroll scored at the 9:24 mark as the Royals took a 2-0 lead into the second period.

The Hawks carried the play through much of the second, outshooting Victoria 14-6, but neither team found the back of the net as the Royals took their 2-0 advantage into the third.

Portland kept applying pressure throughout the third, and finally broke through when Taylor Leier scored with just over 13 seconds to go in the period, cutting Victoria's lead to 2-1. The Royals then stopped Portland's last second attempt at an equalizer as they finished with the one-goal win.

The Hawks outshot the Royals 39-27. Brendan Burke stopped 25 of 27 shots in goal for Portland, while Victoria's Patrik Polivka made 38 saves on 39 shots.

Game 4 will be tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Victoria., and there will be a Game 5 Thursday night at the Moda Center.
