It remained that way until the 8:59 mark of the second when Chase De Leo spun and fed a cross-ice pass to Taylor Leier, who fired it past Tri-Cities goaltender Eric Comrie for a 1-0 Portland lead. The Americans tied it at the 11:30 mark when Parker Bowles scored to make it 1-1, which remained the score going into the third.
The Americans took their first lead 37 seconds into the third on a power play when Bowles scored his second of the game for a 2-1 lead. The Hawks held a big advantage in shots on goal through the game, and the pressure paid off at the 11:07 mark when Matt Dumba sent a blast from the blueline past Comrie to tie the game at 2-2.
It remained tied through the end of the third, setting up overtime, where just 30 seconds in Leipsic scored the winner to give the Hawks the 3-2 victory.
Brendan Burke played his first game in goal in a month, and earned the win with 18 saves on 20 shots. Comrie made 46 saves on 49 Portland shots in the loss.
