Winterhawks take 3-1 series lead over Victoria with 4-3 Game 4 win

The Portland Winterhawks took a 3-1 series lead over the Victoria Royals in their second round playoff series with a 4-3 Game 4 victory Tuesday in Victoria.

The Hawks will have a chance to close out the series and advance to the Western Conference Final in Game 5 Thursday at the Moda Center.

Brendan Leipsic scored twice for the Hawks in the win, and has points in all eight playoff games thus far, and a 15-game point streak overall. He also took over the league lead in playoff scoring with 18 points in eight games.

Victoria's Tyler Soy opened the scoring 6:39 into the game to give the Royals a 1-0 lead, but the Hawks got that one back at the 8:06 mark when Adam Rossignol went hard to the net and banged in a rebound to tie it at 1-1, which remained the score going into the second period.

Portland took a lead 12:18 into the second on a power play when Leipsic scored in a scramble in front of the net for a 2-1 Winterhawks advantage. Late in the period Victoria tied it with a shorthanded goal from Taylor Crunk to make it 2-2 after two periods.

Victoria's Steven Hodges struck quickly with a power play goal seven seconds into the third for a 3-2 lead, but just 1:26 later Leipsic was alone at the side of the Royals' net and went top corner to tie the game at 3-3. Later in the period at the 8:05 mark, Chase De Leo scored what would end up as the game-winning goal on a shot from the slot as he gave the Hawks a 4-3 victory in Game 4 and a 3-1 series lead.

Matt Dumba also hit the scoresheet twice with a pair of assists.

Brendan Burke earned the win with 27 saves on 30 Victoria shots. Patrik Polivka took the loss for the Royals, allowing four goals on 38 shots.
