HS Blitz is back and better than ever
Each week during high school football season KATU sports photographer Mike "Rossy" Rosborough previews the upcoming action on High School Blitz. Here's Rossy kicking off his previews with week 1:
Buckle up your chinstraps, folks, because the Blitz is back and looking for highlights in all the right places. That's right, our tireless crew of sideline lensmen head out for the next ten Fridays and one Thursday to bring back the sharpest and noisiest game action this side of Sportscenter.
We're also getting social this year. All season long post your best crowd shots on the KATU News Facebook page or tweet using the hashtag #K2Blitz.
We get off to a rousing start with the "Game of the Week" - Tualatin at Southridge. Nate Bynum takes over as chief of the GOW crew, and along with photographer Tim Hurtt will be traveling for a live report with the winners of each game. It's one of the most exciting parts of our show.
This week's Game of the Week features two 2011 playoff teams with traditions and expectations of postseason success. The Timberwolves squeaked out a 12-8 win over Crater and the Skyhawks lost on the road to Sheldon 35 to 28. It's usually good to go with the home team in the early stages of a season and Southridge returns most of a squad that peaked late. Oh, and they are large and run the ball well. Check out the results and smiles of the winners live with Nate and company on Friday night.
New this year for us is the "Spotlight Game" and the first one is going to be explosive - Aloha at Tigard. Aloha (1-0) welcomes some real studs back from injuries that derailed 2011's run for a repeat title. Top of the list is Oregon recruit Thomas Tyner, who only had 5 TDs and the 160+ yards that came with them in the first half of a 45-0 thumping of Thurston last week. Traveling to Tigard, who use three pinball wizards to match up with Tyner's production and have added a passing game over the summer, few games on the schedule will match the possibilities for lighting up the scoreboard. The only flaw here is I don't get to see it in person.
We are looking to pay more attention to rivalry games in the schedule and our first choice is an old school Portland flavor - Jefferson at Grant. Admittedly, Jeff is a 5A, really 4A, school and Grant is 6A and the largest city team, but tradition says this game is a toss-up between two teams battling for the title "Kings of Northeast." The Generals graduated a load of seniors but do return some talented skill players. The Democrats bring in a new coach and enthusiasm. I have to take the Generals in this early showdown.
September has become a month of post season preview games and our lineup is dotted with many. Standouts include Roseburg visiting Sprague, Hillsboro at McNary, Grants Pass at West Linn, South Salem at David Douglas and Beaverton going east to Reynolds at MHCC.
Defending champ Lake Oswego takes on a surprising Centennial squad and the Eagles look to catch the Lakers thinking a week ahead to the Jesuit game. They run the ball and the clock - a good early test for both teams.
Jeld-Wen Field is the site of a rematch between Sheldon and Central Catholic at 7 p.m. Both met in last fall's semifinals when the Irish prevailed 18-9 in a close game, only to lose the final to L.O. Expectations are high for each program again this year and we look forward to bringing you the outcomes and highlights of games all season long.
Send in your thoughts on your favorite teams and players as we go thru the season and see what 2012 has to offer.
So check us out Friday night after the 11 o'clock news at 11: 35. The High School BLITZ! We have the best and most highlights on the air!
