On December 23, 1871, a steamboat departed from the Japanese port of Yokohama bound for post-Gold Rush San Francisco. Aboard were five young girls, ranging in age from 6 to 14, whose mission was to learn the ways of the West and return to help nurture a new generation. Janice Nimura, author of Daugthers of the Samuari, joined us to share this fascinating story and how the decade they spent in American changed not only them, but Japan.
