A junior at Westview High School is helping those who are visually impaired in impoverished areas of the world.

Sai Hitesh Vavilapalli started The I Mission, a nonprofit organization, in 2016.

“What we do is we gather many patients together and we do screening examines and we have eye camps to test whether they are ready to go through the cataract and retinal surgeries that our partners and the people that we work with offer,” he said during an interview with KATU’s Deb Knapp at the KATU studios Wednesday.

When they’re ready, patients then undergo the surgeries.

Vavilapalli decided to focus on restoring people’s vision because, of all the senses, he finds vision the most inspiring.

“There’s so much that we see that we capture, not only in words, but vision is just something else,” he said.
