The 26,000 students and more than 3,000 staff members in Vancouver’s Evergreen School District returned to class on Wednesday.

Amid the first day jitters and excitement at Frontier Middle School, the district’s new superintendent Dr. John Steach was there to welcome students.

"Our staff has an energy level that I haven't seen in the last 3 years here at Evergreen,” said Dr. Steach.

Frontier Principal Griffin Peyton also made the most of the first day, greeting children as they arrived at the front doors.

"The kids don't care what you know until they know that you care, so for us it's really important to make sure that we get out, have relationships with the students, make ourselves visible," said Peyton.

KATU’s Wesleigh Ogle joined some of the kids Wednesday as they returned from summer break.

"I'm like excited, but I'm nervous at the same time," said 7th-grader Briana Andrews.
