A 13-year-old Kelso boy has been charged with manslaughter this week, after allegedly shooting and killing his friend last month.

The shooting was reported Oct. 14 at a home in the 1500 block of Carrol Road, a few miles east of Kelso.

The boy called 911 and told police he and his friend, 13-year-old Edgar Vazquez, were playing with a firearm. Vazquez suffered a single gunshot wound to his upper body, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The boy told police he had fired the shotgun before that day.

He said he checked the gun before the shooting by racking the action, and saw a round eject from the shotgun. He told police he racked the action a second time, and thinking it was empty, pointed it at Vazquez.

He told police he didn't intend on shooting his friend and that it was an accident, but he didn't tell police why he was pointing the gun at him in the first place.

He'll appear in court Tuesday, and he's being held without bail.
