Health officials say 14 children in the Clark County area are confirmed to have measles amid an outbreak, and that other people in the region could have been exposed.

Since January 1, officials said there have been 12 children between 1-10 years old and two youths ages 11-18 with confirmed cases of the measles.

Of those children, 13 were unimmunized for the infection, and one was not verified in getting the vaccine.

Measles symptoms begin with a fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash.

"Measles can be so contagious that you can be in a room, and if you’re susceptible, two hours after someone with measles left, and still get the disease," said Dr. Alan Melnick, the director of public health for Clark County.

If you or your child show signs of measles, call your health care provider before coming in so they can limit exposing anyone else in the waiting room.

Multnomah County Health said they have had no confirmed cases yet, but said there is a risk of exposure.

Officials said those who are infected visited public areas while contagious, including the Portland International Airport, Portland-area Costco and IKEA stores, several healthcare facilities, schools, and other locations across the region.

"The populations we’re really concerned about are infants under 12 months of age, because they’re generally not old enough to get the vaccination," said Melnick.

Health officials also say pregnant women are at risk of having miscarriages if exposed.
