1World Chorus sings for unity and peace
A choir of 150 kids from three local elementary schools is preparing for its big performance Wednesday night.
But the kids have already taken their message of unity and peace to heart.
This year’s 1World Chorus has kids from Woodland and Hayhurst elementary schools and Ivy Montessori charter school.
They’ve been practicing at the direction of professional musician Aaron Nigel Smith. He puts together a 1World Chorus every couple of years. He sees the kids living what they learn.
"It's like magic for me. It's like healing for me. It's like everything that I'm kinda striving for, you know," Smith says. "I do this because I was really impacted at an early age by music. It really changed my life and set me on a trajectory and a future and a light and a path to follow."
1World is a nonprofit that promotes peace and benefits music camps in Jamaica, Kenya and here in Portland.
