8.2 quake reported near Fiji, no tsunami threat expected for west coast or Hawaii

PORTLAND, Ore.—A strong earthquake hit the Fiji Islands on Saturday afternoon, and officials said they do not expect a tsunami to hit the west coast of North America or Hawaii.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the 8.2 magnitude quake deep in the Pacific Ocean off of Fiji in the South Pacific basin.

Officials at the National Tsunami Warning Center said no Pacific-wide tsunami threat was generated by the quake.

The quake happened around 5:20 p.m. PT Saturday.
