An Amtrak train struck and killed a bicyclist Thursday night.

The crash happened along 12th Street just south of State Street about two blocks from the train station around 7:30 p.m.

The victim is between 30 and 40 years old, said Gabe Benmoussa, with the Salem Fire Department.

The bicyclist died at the scene.

According to the Salem Police Department, the man was riding his bicycle westbound when he was struck by the southbound train. Police said it appears the railroad's warning signs and barriers were working at the time of the crash.

Amtrak said the train, with 87 passengers, was headed to Eugene. All but 20 of the passengers opted to take a bus to Eugene.

The man's name has not been released.
