Beached shark winds up near North Bend

NORTH BEND, Ore. -- A shark made its way into the bay over the weekend and ended up on the shore just north of the McCoullough Bridge in Coos Bay.

The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology identified it as a salmon shark.

Salmon sharks can grow to be as long as 10 feet, but this one was rather small.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says it is common for sharks and whales to wander in shallow waters and end up on the beach.

Viewers tell KCBY they spotted the shark stuck in the mud as early as Saturday and it was beached by noon Sunday.
