While many federal workers are falling on tough times because of the partial government shutdown, local businesses and organizations are stepping up.

The Blanchet House of Hospitality in downtown Portland welcomes workers and their families. No questions asked.

“I know there are many people who may find it hard to ask for help, who are the first one to give it, so taking this time, which is challenging for everybody, an opportunity to lean on each other is important,” said Kelly Lyons with the Blanchet House.

On Friday night, volunteers prepared and served dinner.

“It’s kinda an Asian flair, over a bed of rice, and we have some cinnamon-spiced apples and a nice green salad,” said Lyons about Friday night’s meal.

Everyone is welcome.

“Especially during these challenging times with the shutdown, it’s really important that the community knows we’re there for them” Lyons said.

The Blanchet House at 3rd and Glisan serves breakfast, lunch and dinner six days a week. There’s no need to call beforehand. Just come down, bring your family and get a hot meal.
