Bones found along SW Portland hiking trail are human, investigation continues
Police confirmed the bones that were found off a trail in SW Portland last weekend are those of a human.
Several hikes called police Sunday after finding some bones on a trail along Macadam Avenue near the Sellwood Bridge at River View Natural Area.
They led police to the remains. The Oregon State Medical Examiner and homicide detectives were called out to conduct a death investigation.
One officer tells KATU News a gun was found near the body, but it's unclear if both are connected.
At this point, police aren’t sure of any identifying characteristics of the remains. They are also working to find a cause of death.
Alyssa Hill and her husband live in the are and they say they hike the trails in the River View natural Area at least twice a week.
"A lot of people walking their dogs, a lot of college kids cutting through to their houses and campus and stuff," said Hill. "It's just kind of disconcerting. We usually consider this neighborhood to be very safe. There's a lot of kids, obviously, college kids and I'm surprised to hear it."
The hiking trail is back open to the public.
