Camas man arrested after shooting outside Vancouver Mall
A Camas man accused of shooting someone in an apparent drug deal made his first court appearance Wednesday in Clark County court.
Matthew J. Cash, 18, is charged with first-degree assault in connection with a Monday night shooting outside Vancouver Mall.
The 911 caller said two men were fighting and one fired a weapon, according to a probable cause affidavit. Officers found a man named Damon Suarez and his girlfriend at the scene, who both said an unknown man shot at Suarez during an altercation.
According to court documents, the girlfriend later changed her story and said that Suarez was at the mall to meet a man named "Cash" for a drug deal. She said Cash tried to shoot her boyfriend when the deal went bad.
A witness at the scene reported that the shooter left in a silver minivan.
Police say they are familiar with Cash, and found a minivan matching the description on Northeast 49th Street. A woman reportedly came out of an apartment nearby the van, and asked officers what Cash had done. She then escorted him out of the apartment to be arrested, according to court docs.
Cash reportedly admitted to firing a weapon, but said he took it from Suarez. Police say they found the firearm at Cash's home.
His bail was set at $200,000.
