Carjacking investigation leads to officer-involved shooting, suspect dead
Police say officers shot and killed a man Saturday evening after a carjacking investigation.
Portland police say they responded to a crash around 7:30 p.m. at Stark Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. It involved a stolen silver Honda CRV from East Portland from earlier in the day.
The man driving the car ran into Cityteam, a homeless shelter on Grand Ave and Stark St.
A witness tells KATU he was threatening himself and other people with a knife. John Terrio, another witness, says he was walking across the street when he saw several officers fire shots at the man while people were inside the building.
"They yelled some commands to the person and then seconds later you just heard maybe eight shots in a row. The part that I noticed was, like, I could see their weapons, I could see them moving, and I could see the smoke cloud going up as they were shooting," said Terrio.
At this time, police cannot confirm if the suspect had a weapon or if he stole the car originally.
The officers involved will be put on paid administrative leave.
The suspect's identity is being withheld until next of kin have been notified.
No one else was injured.
