Portland Commissioner Amanda Fritz's brother-in-law and his wife were killed in a tour bus crash earlier this week in Mexico, her office confirmed.

This isn't the first time the commissioner is dealing with a horrific, deadly crash in her family. Her husband, Dr. Steven Fritz, was killed in a car crash on Interstate 5 back in September 2014.

Dr. Fritz's brother, Andy Fritz, and his wife, Jody, were with a group traveling from a cruise ships to visit Mayan ruins in Mexico, when the bus flipped over on the narrow highway earlier this week.

Jody Fritz was the assistant principal at Sand Hill Elementary School in Belfair. Andy Fritz was a professor at Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood.

"I'm in shock still," said Sand Hill principal Jason Swaser. "I think it's going to take me a while to process this still with how our staff is handling it and kids are handling it, it just seems unreal."

Clover Park Technical College remembered Andy for inspiring students as an environmental science professor for about two decades. Loved ones told KOMO News both educators had a passion for running and went above and beyond for their students and families over the years.

"They were easygoing," said family friend Tim Paul. "Jody was always laughing and smiling and Andy had a quirky sense of humor."
