Deputies investigate homicide near North Plains, man confirmed dead
Homicide detectives are investigating after a man was shot and killed on a rural property outside North Plains.
Washington County sheriff’s deputies were called out Tuesday afternoon on reports of a disturbance involving a gun at a property off Dairy Creek Road.
Deputies arrived at the home and found a man outside with a gunshot wound.
"They performed lifesaving measures. Unfortunately, he did die at the scene," said Deputy Jeff Talbot, a spokesperson with the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said they are actively looking for a suspect.
"Just shock. I was just amazed, really, that something was going on like that," said Ryan, a neighbor who lives across the street from the home.
Ryan said he has lived in the area for almost a decade and has never encountered any crime like this. He said he has met the man who owns the property, saying he is pleasant and doesn't seem aggressive. However, Ryan added, he has seen several people hanging around the property before.
"There were a couple of people there that looked a little shady," he said. "Needless to say, it was a little sketchy of a house."
In the neighborhood, homes are separated by acres. Ryan said hearing a gunshot out is not unusual.
"It's not uncommon to have guns out in the country, so that doesn't surprise me. Knowing someone chose to use that gun on another human being is concerning," he said.
Regardless, Ryan says he feels safe and hopes the incident is isolated.
"This is our dream place. I don't intend on letting something like that affect my life," he said.
Deputies are not releasing the name of the man who was killed until next of kin has been contacted.
They say there is no threat to the public at this time.
