Expect several Interstate 5 closures in Portland this summer for major repaving project
Drivers who take Interstate 5 through the heart of Portland will likely face some closures at times this summer. ODOT is just beginning a major repaving project on both sides of the Interstate from the Moda Center north to the Interstate Bridge.
It's been about 15 years since the roadway was last repaved, and an ODOT spokesman says it's showing signs of wear and tear. The agency says this is maintenance they have to do to keep the integrity of the roadway intact. The Rose Quarter and North Portland sections see a high volume of traffic daily.
The area that will be repaved is about 6 miles long.
Another portion of Interstate 5, stretching for about 5-and-a-half miles between OR-99W and I-205, is also set for repaving on both the north and southbound sides.
The good news for most drivers is that to lessen the impact, ODOT crews will be working at night on weekdays and weekends. Schedules will be Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The bad news is that there will have to be multiple overnight closures of several I-5 on and off-ramps. Those include NE MLK/OR 99E (near Marine Dr.), N Victory Blvd., N Lombard St., N Winning Way and NE Weidler St.
There will also be several full weekend overnight closures of I-5, on both the north and southbound sides, although not at the same time. Detours around the work will be in place during the following times.
I-5 SOUTHBOUND will close between the Marquam and Fremont Bridges from 10 p.m. on Friday, July 14 to 5 a.m. on Monday, July 16 and again from 10 p.m. Friday, July 21 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 23.
I-5 NORTHBOUND will close between the Marquam and Fremont Bridges from 10 p.m. on Friday, July 27 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 30 and again from 10 p.m. Friday, August 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 6.
Another major impact will be the work to rehabilitate the ramps at I-5 and I-84. That project starts in June, but full ramp closures will not happen until July and August. The schedule for those is still being determined.
For the latest information on these projects, ODOT has set up a website with details on all the projects.
