Senior citizens and people who are home-bound will get a sweet surprise this Valentine's Day, thanks to some local Girl Scouts and the generosity of the community.

On Tuesday, the scouts helped load up more than 8,500 boxes of donated Girl Scout cookies into a Meals on Wheels delivery truck.

The donation was from the Girl Scouts' “Gift of Caring” program, which lets people skip the sugar and donate a box instead.

The girls tell KATU News that even though they won't interact with the recipients, they know the cookies will be appreciated.

“Even if they haven't met face-to-face the person who put some of that energy and work into making those cookies go there,” said Girl Scout Deja Fitzwater. “It's just amazing … to know the love and hard work that was put into it, you can just feel it.”

Meals on Wheels say the cookie boxes will go into the 5,000 meals they serve every weekday.
