Hawaiian Air brings back direct flight to Maui from PDX
The Hawaiian Airlines direct flight from Portland International Airport to Maui is back!
The flight took off from PDX at 8 a.m. Monday morning.
"We had quite a send off this morning," Bill Jenkins, flying to Maui, said.
In the boarding area there was a live band playing traditional Hawaiian music, Hawaiian flowers and lots of smiles.
"I definitely feel the aloha spirit," Rene Cowell, flying to Maui, said.
The Hawaiian Air direct flight from PDX is something the company is obviously celebrating. Brent Overbeek, the vice president of revenue management and network planning for Hawaiian Airlines, said it's a sign of better times. Hawaiian used to fly this route. Service stopped in 2012.
"2012, different economic time, different fuel environment, we didn't have this beautiful equipment," Overbeek said.
Over the past six years, the company's worked on growing a presence up and down The West Coast, and on the islands. It went well, and Hawaiian Air made the decision to invest in new planes. They’re A321Neo planes. They’re state-of-the-art and way more efficient.
Plus, on the inside the bathroom sign figurines dawn Hawaiian shirts. There’s also mood lighting on board. It’s meant to mimic the stunning sunrises and sunsets on the islands, but besides the beauty, it's really about convenience.
"It's going to make it way easier," Debbie Viegas, traveling to Maui, said. "Not having a layover with two children in Honolulu."
"Conveniently timed in the morning, you'll be in Maui by lunchtime," Overbeek said.
This Hawaiian Airlines flight to Maui takes off from PDX everyday at 8 a.m.
