4 injured in head-on crash on Highway 26 near Elsie

Elsie crash

Four people were taken to the hospital Monday afternoon following a head-on crash on Highway 26 near Elsie, Banks Fire District 13 said.

Reports of the collision came in about 4:00 p.m. at milepost 25, roughly 5 miles east of Elsie.

Oregon State Police say 73-year-old Howard Kanelakos, of Houston, Texas, was driving eastbound when he crossed into the westbound lane for unknown reasons.

Kanelakos collided with a westbound white Ford F-150 that was pulling a black box trailer. Kris Johnston, 53, of Seaside, was driving the Ford pickup truck and was unable to avoid hitting the Subaru.

Both drivers were taken by ambulances to hospitals. Their two passengers were flown to OHSU by LifeFlight helicopter.

They all suffered critical injuries.

The roadway was back open by about 8 p.m.
