Investigators say man tried siphoning gas, caught pants on fire, stripped while fleeing

Investigators say a man caught himself on fire while trying to siphon gas out of a U-Haul and into a van in Southeast Portland on Nov. 19, 2018. KATU photo

PORTLAND, Ore. – Fire investigators say a person who was trying to siphon gasoline out of a U-Haul truck into a van caught the vehicles and himself on fire in Southeast Portland Monday morning.

Portland Fire and Rescue responded to the incident at 6:48 p.m. at Southeast 2nd Avenue and Southeast Belmont Street.

Investigators say the suspect was seen running away from the vehicles with his pants on fire. They say he stripped and then took off running.

Firefighters are concerned about the man and believe he might be badly injured.
