Lawyers rally to support resistance movements
Several dozen lawyers rallied Friday in downtown Portland to show support for what they call "resistance movements."
The rally was organized by the National Lawyers Guild and was held on the steps of the Justice Center.
The attorneys in attendance said they support social justice movements and oppose what they call unlawful actions from the Trump Administration, including the recent travel ban.
“The legal system as a whole, as some of the speakers here today pointed out, can be used as a tool of repression or to resist repression, as a sword against communities impacted, or as a shield from that impact,” said J. Ashlee Albies, an attorney. “And as the Lawyers Guild, we believe using the law as a tool to fight back.”
No Trump supporters showed up to oppose the rally.
It was part of a "national general strike," which saw several other rallies around the metro area.
