CHAMPOEG, Ore. – The Marion County Sheriff’s Office identified the person killed and the people who were injured in a four-vehicle crash that occurred Monday.

The crash occurred on McKay Road Northeast near French Prairie Road Northeast at 7:55 a.m.

The sheriff’s office believes Mildred Schaber, 81, of Newberg, was driving a small SUV east on McKay Road Northeast when she began driving into the oncoming lane. They say Schaber first side swiped a large work truck that was traveling westbound on McKay Road.

The driver of the work truck, Clifford Erickson, 39, of Grand Ronde, avoided a head-on collision by steering into the eastbound lane. Erickson suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Investigators say Schaber continued driving west and struck an oncoming passenger car head-on. The driver of the other vehicle, 51-year-old Catherine Ashely and her passenger Kacy McCauley, 29, both of Aurora, were transported to Salem Hospital.

A fourth driver, 84-year-old Keith Wright, of Aurora, was driving westbound and rear ended Schaber moments after the head-on collision.

Wright was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Schaber was killed in the collision. The sheriff’s office says she was not wearing her seat belt.

Investigators say the glare from the sun was a contributing factor in the crash.
