Officials say one person was hospitalized in a fire at a downtown Portland apartment building Thursday morning.

Investigators say it was caused by "improperly discarded smoking materials."

Crews were called to the scene at the Park Plaza Apartments in the 1900 block of SW Park Avenue around 10:30 a.m.

Toma Matisof says he woke up to find his roommate, a Portland State University student, badly burned.

"He busted in my door and was just really frantic and kind of in shock, asking for help," Matisof said. "It definitely got out of control. His hands were like really badly burned. He was completely charred over like his whole face."

Matisof said his roommate asked for water, so he rushed to the kitchen and filled up a jug.

"He didn't have his shirt on, and his whole body was like blacked over," Matisof said. "He like grabbed the water jug and it was completely billowing with smoke."

The building was evacuated. Damage was limited primarily to the room where the fire started.
